Those who live in Ghana and/or are familiar with the Ghanaian environment and systems, please tell us if:
1. Insurance policies work? Do they pay for claims?

2. What policies work? Home, auto, life insurance, injury, property and liabilities? Funeral insurance?

3. If they work? How are they claimed and what is the average length of time and the nature of bureaucracy?

I am asking because we had our vehicle broken into, someone broke our windshield and did not get them replaced, no police visit after the theft or the vehicle damage. No insurance payments although Ghanaian police is always harassing drivers a gazillion times a day about auto insurance.

Reason 2.
Recently a Ghanaian/American who had a property (a large house-12 bed) in Ghana had it burned leading to severe property damage and he did not seem to have any hope of insurance payments or replacement. Not sure if he had one but…people will buy if they are aware it exists and are confident about claim payments.

Reason 3.
Last week I heard in a Ghanaian radio news about a 32 year old man who was died about 5 years after of suffering a severe injury and paralysis after a so called Advertising board fell on him. He, lost his mobility (immediately at age 28), became severely disabled laid bed bound for 5 years. No insurance for hospital bills, lost income, care, surgical needs etc.

4. The banking crisis and losses by individuals and the state due to lack of insurance.

What works down there?

If they want diasporians to send their hard won money or acquire properties and business there, what are the modalities to protect prospective returnees, their families and properties against disabilities, injuries and damage or loss of property?

Please submit your insights, knowledge, experience and thoughts.

Thank you!
