South Sudan fought for many years for independence after suffering oppression, human rights violations and genocide from Sudan. They obtained independence in 2011 with support from the United Nations (Security Council), the African Union and the international community particularly powerful nations including the USA, Norway, UK, Canada etc.
Two years after independence (2013), South Sudan broke out into civil war after a dispute rose between the president, Salva Kiir Mayardit (Dinka ethnic group) and the then vice president Riek Machar (Nuer ethnic group) as the two fought over power. The power struggle between the duo led to the dismissal of vice president Riek Machar by President Kiir. Since then, the president’s government forces have been fighting Machar’s rebel groups.
Many peace efforts have failed! The civil war and associated violence have led to the death of about 400, 000 South Sudanese, human rights violations including gang rapes, looting, burning of villages, property destructions and the displacement of 4 million (a third of their population) people inside and outside the country, according to the United Nations and other sources.
The oil industry, the country’s largest source of revenue, is now controlled by foreigners including China (47%), Malaysia and Egypt (45%) white the state of South Sudan owns only (8%).
South Sudan, which is endowed with abundant oil and some mineral resources now shares top two spots with Somalia as the most corrupt countries in the the world.
It’s also one of the poorest countries on earth, no access to basic goods and services, most children can’t attend school due to violence. Many South Sudanese are facing starvation and famine as violence prevents them from farming, has destroyed their farms and cattle. Currently, many worry that South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation may be on the path to collapse if hostilities don’t cease sooner.
Violence and inability to solve problems through proper dialogue, distribute power and national resources destroy nations. It’s important to know that national resources and power ought to be distributed fairly and equitably through fair and transparent processes.
Corruption, nepotism, grant theft can lead to violence and civil war which in turn can collapse a nation.
It is important to remember that political entrepreneurs and their pursuits for power may not always be about you or your interests but their own personal interests and gains.
Always look through things critically and beneath the surface before you join in or support. Don’t be a “blind” or ignorant follower, be smart! Resist pressure and don’t let bullies sway you. Think for yourself because any normal adult possesses enough mental capacity to make his/her own decisions.
Know that not all chants for democracy or justice may be about you and your family at all. Seek what’s best for you, your family and your nation.
Food for thought.
